TONED TO TARNISHED

Toning shampoos are famous for fighting all our brassy blondes, We use them religiously in between hair appointments. Noticeably though these shampoos are creating build up on the hair making our blondes darker, muddier and adding dull tones throughout. Lets also remember that toning products only cover up underlining brassiness not actually eliminating the problem.

A lot of people believe that their hair turns brassy over time due to their toner from the salon fading, but there is more to it than that. We have a significant amount of minerals in our water that plays a big role causing some mineral build up. You will also find the copper piping (particularly in older homes), chlorine, hot styling tools and even natural elements like UV rays, wind and pollution will all contribute to brassy hair.

There are a few things to help reduce the effects of these factors such as,
Using a clarifying shampoo that will help reveal your most radiant blonde and also the use of a cuticle sealer which will ensure that nothing will penetrate through into the hair.

Once you are on top of these factors you might find you will not have to use your blonde shampoo or conditioner as much - helping your blonde stay as light and bright as when you first had it done.

Over toning at home is also making it hard for hairdressers to re-create your favourite blondes. These “at home toners” create a barrier, making it hard for hairdressers to use lighteners to their fullest lifting ability.

So, to reduce the build-up of toning products and to keep your blonde in all its beautiful bright and shining glory, your toning shampoo should not replace your regular shampoo.

There are heaps of great toning products out there but be wary not to be too heavy handed with them.
