THE WAY WE VIEW COLOUR

We have all been there before, your client goes home and looks in their mirror and all the sudden you’re getting a phone call saying “my hair looks a different colour” and they are freaking out!

So let’s talk about lighting and how different lighting can affect the look, depth and true colour of the hair.

Let’s first quickly touch base with salon décor- which also makes a huge difference. Having anything from a full wall or just pops of colour near your clients chair can reflect onto the hair therefore changing the true outcome of the colour. By keeping walls neutral as possible if not white, would help you minimise the risk of this happening. And the best thing about non coloured walls is that it will keep the salon looking crisp, clean and fresh without ever dating.

There are four main lighting colours

  1. Direct sunlight
  2. Fluorescent lighting (cool)
  3. Filtered lighting (warm)
  4. LED (white)

Warm lights are going to make your blondes look golden, if not throw off some copper tones. Also making your coppers and golds dull and deeper than what they really are.

Cool and White lights will show your colours as being lighter, brighter and more radiant than what they might look like in natural lighting.

Your best lighting would be keeping it as natural as possible with big windows flooding in heaps of natural light, keeping your lighting not to cool nor to warm also making sure your salon lighting does not create shadows. Taking your client outside to show them their colour if you don’t have the luxury of windows, will give them the opportunity to see their hair in all different lights before they leave.

Your colours will vary if you’re changing from in-doors to out-doors, from the shops to into the car. Make your client aware of this by explaining to them about the change in lighting to the change in their hair colour.

Lighting is the key and I think by having great lighting helps stylist do their job well and also helps clients see their true result.

The best comparison I’ve seen is by Guy Tang. The perfect way to show you about the ever changing colours in our hair Vs lighting.
